18th JULY TO AUGUST 2008

From July 18th to the 2nd August 2008 Rupert Young will spend two weeks navigating 133 miles of The River Thames in a 4-man pedalo to raise money for THE MOOD FOUNDATION, a charity that provides treatment for people with depressive conditions. Rupert Young's Pedalo Challenge Blog - Day 2
After the initial excitement and enthusiasm of day one of my charity challenge to get from Gloucestershire to Pimlico - by pedalo - the second day was definitely more of a struggle. Although I've been in training for the trip, it hasn't taken long for the aches and pains to set in. Ouch, my bum! Oooh, my back! Arggh, my stomach muscles! And my legs are like jelly. Still, better not start moaning this early on – there's a long way to go yet...best to take it just one day at a time.

I'm passing a lot of wildlife in the river – it's amazing what you can see at this time of year, moorhens, swallows, dragonflies and of course those pesky swans!

But as well as our feathered friends, there's a lot of human activity to watch while continuing on my journey. More and more people are coming out to cheer us on, it's fantastic, a real boost. Of course this means that more and more people are hearing about the charity – and if you want to find out more go to the Mood Foundation pages.

The spectators are very kind in offering us cups of tea all day. One chap also offered us a tow to London, which unfortunately we had to turn down! The lock keepers are a bit more bemused by our presence though, giving us funny looks and saying 'Oh we've never had one of those here before!'
See you next time.

Rupert Young's Pedalo Challenge Blog - Day 5

I suppose it had to happen sometime – I fell in!

Most of the time I'm delighted to see so many people on the banks watching our progress - and thanks to a chap called Barry who invited me in for a cup of tea today - but I was hoping no one was watching this time. No such luck – you should have heard the cheer!

Perhaps I'm a bit accident prone, as I keep on getting caught in fishermen's lines! Why oh why do they insist on leaving them hanging across the river...oh, hang on, that's right, to catch fish....anyway I don't think they like me much as I keep getting tangled up in them.

We had a really good weekend though, coming just short of my target of Wallingford last night. Have got a bit of catching up to do. Have been singing along to some great tunes on Magic on my DAB digital radio. They keep playing songs by some bloke called Will or someone, must look him up when I get back

Talking of Magic, I passed a boat called Foxy this morning, not long after I'd spoken to him on the show to give him my daily update. It reminded me that the next time I see Neil Fox will be at the finishing line on 2nd August. By which time I'll hopefully have raised thousands for the Mood Foundation, which supports people affected by depression. Help me in my cause and donate now!

I must say it's a great way to travel. Normally if I want to go from Oxford to London it takes an hour or so on the train. But there's a lot to be said for doing it the slow way, it makes you appreciate the beauty of Britain's waterways and teaches you a lot about patience.

Want to see where we're headed next? Take a look at the route map. See you tomorrow...

Rupert Young's Pedalo Challenge - Day 5

Today was a HOT day.

It would have been very splendid indeed to be relaxing in the sunshine with a glass of Pimm's in my hand. Instead, I had several miles to make up and spent the day pedalo'ing away (is that the right word?), necking back the water in an effort to stay hydrated. I did have the ingenious idea of using my umbrella as a sail to help get some speed up but it was difficult to steer at the same time!

Actually I didn't realise how hard it was going to be...you have to focus so hard on getting to the next stop. It really is the most exhausting thing I've ever done. I still love the pedalo... but I might not by this time next week!

It's all in a good cause though, which is what's driving me forward. I set up the
Mood Foundation in an effort to make the treatment of depression more accessible for everybody - I know how hard it can be to beat.

We had loads of donations today so a big thanks to all those that have supported the cause so far. Keep those donations coming though - just go to the Mood Foundation page on the Magic website to
find out how you can donate.

The next big challenge is to get Claudia Schiffer on the boat, hoping that will happen in the next few days. I hope she's not going to be in heels. She might find life on board a bit tricky!

We've got some great celeb guests coming up actually –
take a peek at our celeb guest pages to find out more.

Staying in North Stoke tonight and aiming to set off at 7am. Bye for now...

Rupert Young's Pedalo Challenge - Day 7

So far on my charity pedalo trip from Gloucestershire to Pimlico I have...

fallen in…

developed some rather attractive sunburn…

been attacked by geese….

and now my flipping tent has broken!

The poles have had it - so it's just a big flapping canvas at the moment. Tonight I'll be camping in The Oratory Boat Club with my mate Phil, who has taken pity on me. I've got another one coming but for tonight I'm down to just a sleeping bag!

In fact it’s been a funny old day all round. In one way it was very solitary, as I journeyed along the Thames in glorious summer sunshine. But I’m still able to pick up all my emails from the office. So it was like a normal day at work – apart from the constant peddling! Tent or no tent I’m certainly sleeping well when I hit the sack at the end of the day.

One of the highlights of the day was coming across an amazing group of people at The Beatle & Wedge pub in Moulsford, I want to say a big hello to a wonderful girl called Stephanie who helped me out with free Diet Coke - no, not beer, honest! - and they raised another £80 in donations for The Mood Foundation. Click here to find out how you can make a donation.

While I'm peddling, I'm trying to keep up with some of the same boats that have been travelling down the river like me. Problem is my top speed is about 2 miles an hour! But it’s good to see how others on the river spend their days - turns out it’s pretty much like mine, just a lot faster and with far more breaks!

I am slightly concerned though as apparently there’s storm warnings for Friday and Saturday! Hope the tent is with me by then! Or Claudia Schiffer!

Rupert Young's Pedalo Challenge - Day 8

Sat up late last night as a man who had heard about my charity trip along the Thames to raise money for the Mood Foundation had walked along the river until he found me to talk about his own battles with depression.

He was in his seventies, and listening to his story I was so touched. It reinforced what I am doing. And it's stories like his that keep me going when it's a bit of a struggle out there on the river in this blazing heat.

I also met a lock keeper who suffered from depression and we had a great chat about breaking down the stigma mental health has. This trip is not just about the fundraising - I hope that in some way it might help make depression an easier subject for people to talk about openly.

I'm very excited as well because I've been asked to lecture schools on mental health issues. This is fantastic.

Am in Sonning and heading just around the corner to Wargrave with Graham Seed from the Archers radio show tomorrow, leaving early and stopping to camp in Wargrave tomorrow evening.

Am a bit worried about storms for Friday - hope
Sebastian Faulks can bail out a boat!!!

Rupert Young's Pedalo Challenge - Day 9

A weird thing has happened to me - I feel a bit strange having people on board! The boat's become home, so it's almost like I feel protective over it. I wonder if Ellen MacArthur felt like this?! And the support car left today. I decided that I want to do the last week on my own, so I've stocked up with supplies (and a new tent!)

However, I'd better get used to having people around again as I've got some great
celebrity shipmates about to join me.

Tomorrow I've got Bond author Sebastian Faulkes. He'll be joining me at about 11am when I set off. Need to look best tomorrow too because I've got some TV crews coming down.

Dermott O'Leary has confirmed for Monday lunchtime. He'll be joining me in Windsor. Should be fun!

And Graham Seed (from The Archers) helped out today - a great guy to have on board as he grew up in the area we were going through, so I got a local history lesson along the way! It was a really quick one today too. The Sonning to Wargrave stretch only took 3 hours!

Got 14 miles to do tomorrow and 16 miles on Sunday though, so it's good to have a break if I can!

I'm in Wargrave...half way now...and exactly on schedule! Woohoo! Nice to have some support peddling now. Was a really good, though freakily hot day!

Oh, there was one hairy moment - had a close call with a massive motor boat, as we headed under a bridge in Sonning. I considered abandoning ship! I had right of way, but there was no way he was going to stop...I was quite prepared to squeeze my way through, but I'd have come off much worse!

Rupert Young's Pedalo Challenge - day 10

Had a great day with my latest celebrity shipmate, author Sebastian Faulks.
We had a really good laugh. But his stamina surprised me for a man who plays a lot of tennis - I had to keep prodding him to make him go faster! And he struggled with the steering! Picked up loads of support and donations through Henley too, so thank you to everyone, especially the crew of a boat called Matilda 3 - thank you for the donation!
And if you want to make a donation, just go to my Just Giving page
And I had the most bizarre experience of the trip so far today. I saw this guy in the middle of the river, stripped to his shorts, with something taped to his head - it turned out to be a CD he had made...with £15 on the inside. He had a mate with him and they wanted me to pass it on to someone 'in the know', (I did explain to them that I work for a charity, but I had a listen to their stuff anyway and it wasn't bad!)
Then out of nowhere, they brought out 2 guitars and started playing some more of their stuff for me...for a good half an hour. It was one way to keep entertained out there on the river. Thanks guys!
I feel a bit like I'm on the home straight now. I keep thinking how I have to meet Dermot O'Leary at Windsor Bridge - Monday at 1pm. It's what I'm focusing on, and it seems to be working, because I'm still on schedule.
My journey for the weekend will be...
Saturday - Marlow to Maidenhead
Sun - Maidenhead to Windsor
Take a look at my route map for more details.
Tonight though, I'm roughing it! Having had Bear Grylls on board last week and watching stuff like Ray Mears' show, I reckon I can do all that 'being one with nature' stuff, so instead of putting the tent up, I've make a makeshift home, in a secret woods location just outside Marlow. Well, it can't be that hard can it?!!! I'll let you know on Monday!

Rupert Young's Pedalo Challenge - Day 12
So I've made it to day 12.
Although the way my leg muscles are feeling it's like it's week 12!
But today flew by as I was in the excellent company of my latest celebrity guest, Mr Dermot O'Leary.
What a nice chap to spend a day on the river with. Not sure how relaxing an experience he found it though, it's hard work on a hot day.
Download the latest podcast to hear how we got on.
We saw lots of sights today, whether it was peddling past the Queen's private Windsor gardens and past the place where the Magna Carta was signed or just looking at all those lovely swallows, kingfishers and dragonflies buzzing about on the river. And there were plenty of mad dogs and Englishmen soaking up the summer sun too, which is always fun.
Oh, I mustn't forget to say hi and thanks to Kris from Kris Cruisers for letting me moor and for picking Dermot up after he left the boat. He makes a great cup of tea too!
Rupert x

Rupert Young's Pedalo Challenge - Day 13

Well, I'm nearly there, folks!

With the help of all your kind donations, we've raised a massive £42,000 already! That's only £8,000 off my £50k target - with three days to spare!

Help me reach the magic £50k - if you can spare a few pennies to help me reach the total, then please Donate now!

It's all in a very good cause - the Mood Foundation, the charity I set up to help support people with depression. Want to know more? Click here for more info about the organisation and the people it helps.

Got in a bit of a tight spot last night - the rain was a bit heavy and it nearly sank the pedalo! Cue lots of frantic bailing out of water!

But the Magic listeners have really lifted my spirits today - you've all been amazing. So many supporters out on the river banks. I also had a little help from my friend Cosima who helped power through the afternoon.

And tomorrow promises to be very busy. And I'll have lots of company from my latest celebrity shipmates. Nei
l Fox will join me at Hampton Court at lunchtime, then I'm picking up the lovely Rachel Stevens from Kingston at around 2pm. I feel like some sort of celebrity chauffeur. A very slow chauffeur!

Then it's off to Teddington Locks by mid afternoon. See you there!

I've been on the pedalo for two weeks now and to quote Sir Steve Redgrave, 'if anyone sees me near a boat again you have my permission to shoot me!'

However, I had two fantastic celebrity shipmates on board today so the time just flew. Neil Fox was great company for starters, helping us power through Moule on the Water and up to Hampton Court. He's had some of the best stories of the trip so far (including some very funny ones about Will!)

And former S-Clubber Rachel Stevens was sweet as ever. All hopes of spending time alone with her were dashed unfortunately though as she brought her fiance, Alex, along too! But she seems so happy at the moment and even though she's only got little legs she was able to get some real power on those peddles too. She did say when she got off that her legs felt like jelly though! And I have to say that Alex was also a great help. In fact at one point it was me and him peddling with Neil and Rachel chilling out in the back...that wasn't part of the deal!!!

Once we reached Hampton Court, Neil shot back home (well, it was past his bedtime by then) and Rachel bought me some lunch as she waited to do an interview with Magic's Jamie Edwards about her section of the trip. Listen to the latest podcasts here.

The only problem was, we'd arranged for Jamie to meet us in Kingston and hadn't got that far so had he had a bit of a walk up the towpath to meet us.

With the interview done, I said goodbye to Rachel and Alex and persuded Jamie to help me down river to Kingston. I'm then continued on to Teddington where I'll be resting up tonight ready for the last two parts of the trip which will take me into Pimlico on Saturday afternoon.

Weather wise it's been another scorcher of a day. We saw plenty of people jumping into the river to stay cool (at least they chose to get in, unlike me, who had a helping hand in from a certain Magic Breakfast Show host!) Now that really wasn't part of the deal.

Beware Foxy...I'm gonna get you back one day!

Pedalo power

By Linda Serck

Hungerford's Rupert Young, twin brother of singer Will, hopes to raise £50,000 by travelling 133 miles along the Thames - in a pedalo. BBC Berkshire caught up with the 29-year-old at Whitchurch to find out why.

Will Young's twin brother is on a mission, and it involves the River Thames and an old pedalo he bought for £20.
Rupert Young is raising funds for his Mood Foundation, which supports sufferers of major depression, self-harm and addiction, and hopes to reach his £50,000 when he pedals into Westminster on Saturday 2 August 2008.
He set off from Lechlade in Gloucestershire for his 133-mile trip on Friday 18 July 2008.
Rupert's route

He told BBC Radio Berkshire en route at Whitchurch: "I've done about 21 or 22 locks and I do about 10 to 13 miles a day. I'm up early - 7am in the water and then out the water at 7pm, so I'm doing well but it’s very tiring."

Hungerford-based Rupert is also enlisting the help of several of his celeb friends to help him tread the water.
Survival expert Bear Grylls helped him kick off his watery expedition, and on his journey he'll be joined by Sebastian Faulks, who's also the patron of Mood, as well as Rachel Stevens, Amanda Lamb, Dermot O' Leary and, on the last leg, his brother Will.
That is, of course, if the pedalo survives.
"I put it (pedalo) into a search engine and there was one pedalo for sale in England, and it was full of holes, it was sinking and at the bottom of some yacht marina.
"So I rang them and said 'can I buy it'. It was £20 and I got a garage to fix it up, give it a new skin and respray it. It's now patched up and in working order."
And how is the 29-year-old getting on?
"It's a lot slower than I thought," he told BBC Radio Berkshire on Tuesday 22 July, "I was quite relaxed when I went into this and didn't do too much training.
But he soon discovered it wasn't to be a leisurely ride.
"I have to pedal the whole time if I'm going to move or I just head off into the bank!"
Bear Grylls gave Rupert what at first seemed like a good survival tip - his secret recipe for Nettle Soup. "Which actually was just nettles and water".
As well as celebrities, beneficiaries of the charity are also boarding the pedalo to help Rupert out - "the more important people if you would."
His foundation aims to help people who needed the same treatment Rupert himself benefited from.
"I had my own battle with mental health issues," he says, " with addiction, self harm and major depression.
"I felt like I was able to access treatment because I was financially sound.
"It basically provides the same treatment that I was able to access but to people who aren't as fortunate as I was."

Rupert Young's Pedalo Challenge - Day 14

Today was a tough day. I know I've been moaning about having to slap on the sunscreen and drink all that water - but it sure beats peddling in a downpour. Did Teddington to Chiswick today and it rained the whole flippin' time. Thought I was going to sink I was so happy to get through the day!

Just writing this while I dry out a bit.

It's been a tough couple of weeks, and the money I'm raising for the
Mood Foundation is going to be hard won but so, so worth it. And as well as the money I'm hoping to raise awareness about depression and mental illness, and from the conversations I've had with people I've met along the way I'm proud to say that I've done that in some way.

The folk at Magic have been brilliant too, all those chats with Foxy have helped spread the message - and have really lifted my mood too!

Leaving Chiswick tomorrow afternoon at 4.30pm. Then to Putney, then just have the home straight to do on Saturday. At last, I can say the end is in sight!

It's just me on my own tomorrow, so it'll be great to welcome Will on board on Saturday as we race to the finishing line at Pimlico. I've just checked the weather and it looks like this rain's going to clear up too, so I've got a lot to look forward to in the next couple of days. Need to get some sleep now!

Rupert Young's Pedalo Challenge Blog - Day 16

So much for messing about on the river - today things got dangerous!

There's a totally different sort of water as you come into London and for the first time I've actually thought, 'I'm going down here'. The river suddenly felt very big and wide and me and my little pedalo felt very small indeed. The wind and choppiness were really bad, so the waves were coming in over the pedalo...I was bailing like never before! Quite scary!

Still, I had quite a short trip tonight, thanks to the tide which was on my side, thankfully! Set off at 5.00pm and arrived in Putney at 5:45pm, to be greeted by some of Will's fans, so thanks to Mary, Carly, Surahi and Julie for coming down to cheer me on at today's finish line.

If they hang about until tomorrow they might meet the man himself. Not the one who's been doing all the hard work, I might add! But Will's going to join me from Putney Bridge down to the finish line at Grosvenor Bridge, Pimlico.

Now, I've got to make a final push for donations. What am I doing all this for? The Mood Foundation, a charity I founded to help support people with depression and mental illnesses. I want to raise £50,000 and if I've counted my pennies right, I think we're nearly there. So please, please make a donation - however big or small, it will make a difference. And to find out more about the charity itself, click here.

We're just short of the total so a final push tomorrow and we should make the £50k. And if you need any extra incentive....if we make the £50,000....Will's going for a swim!

See you tomorrow, land-lubbers!

Mood Foundation which he created as a charity reated to support for people with depressive conditions. Whilst the conditions do not discriminate, the recovery process can with treatments inaccessible and often only affordable to a few. Rupert admits there is no magic wand but wants Mood Foundation to help support people gaining access the appropriate services.

So why the pedalo? To raise profile via the 133 mile journey along the Thames, supported by Radio Stations, particularly Magic fm and various celebrity supporters such as Bear Grylls, Sebastian Faulks, Rachel Stevens, Amanda Lamb, Dermot O'Leary, Neil Fox and finally with Rupert's brother Will along with Karen Poole as they cross the finishing line at Chelsea/Grosvenor Bridge in Central London.

A bunch of us turned up to wave and cheer them across the finishing line on what was a sunny and hot afternoon, with the wind and tide generally operating in Rupert's favour. Let's hope the foundation can turn the tide for the people it intends to support.

Sebastian Faulks summing up of Rupert and his creation of "Mood" byon his official website.

On July 25th I am going to be in a pedalo, pedalling — as hard as ruined back and arthritic knee permit me — up the Thames. I am hoping my children will join me. This is to raise money for a charity called the Mood Foundation.
A friend of mine called Rupert Young has started it. Our families are intertwined in friendship over many years.

Rupert suffered from serious depression as a young man and had near-suicidal episodes of self-harm. He was also diagnosed alcoholic.

He lost all his friends and came as close to the end as a man can come.

He discovered, painfully, that support services for severe depressive illness in this country are meagre and over-stretched. He did find help eventually, and is now cured — partly by the therapy he underwent and partly by his own strength of character.

He wants others who find themselves in his situation to have help more easily at hand, and to this end has set up the Mood Foundation, which will pay for qualified therapists to offer free help to those in most need.

The details of what he proposes are at http://www.moodfoundation.com/

One of the things I like about Rupert’s idea is that it is so simple. Overheads will be almost non-existent as Rupert lives a pretty pared-down life. He is a very nice man — happy, I think, just to be alive now — and it would be great to get behind him in this project.

Various well-known people will help with the pedalling. Rupert’s twin brother Will Young, for instance, the singer, will do a stretch, as will he-man Bear Grylls and former S Club Seven star Rachel Stevens. But there will be a lot of sweaty graft from the rest of us.

I have looked into matters of psychological distress in some detail (650 pages of Human Traces to be precise) and I believe no better home for your generosity exists.
