Belinda Carlisle (born on August 17, 1958 in Hollywood, California) is an American singer-songwriter, as well as the lead vocalist and founding member of all-female new wave band The Go-Go's, as well as a successful solo artist. She was recently a judge on the MTV reality show Rock the Cradle.

Carlisle's first venture into music was a brief stint as drummer for the punk band The Germs, under the name Dottie Danger, although illness prevented her from ever performing with them live. Soon after leaving this band, she founded The Go-Go's (originally named The Misfits), with friend and fellow music novice Jane Wiedlin. With bassist-turned-guitarist Charlotte Caffey, guitarist-turned-bassist Kathy Valentine, and drummer Gina Schock, the Go-Go's became one of the most successful American bands of the early 1980s, helping usher new wave music into popular American radio, and becoming the first all-female band in rock history to ever achieve a #1 album, who also wrote their own music, and played their own instruments. The Go-Go's recorded two more studio albums (including 1982 Vacation, which went gold thanks to the title track). "Head over Heels," from their 1984 album Talk Show, made it to #11, but they never repeated the success of their 1981 multi-platinum debut, Beauty and the Beat, which featured the hits "We Got the Beat" and "Our Lips Are Sealed".

Belinda

The Go-Go's broke up in 1985, and Carlisle embarked on a solo career (although she continued to work with fellow Go-Go Charlotte Caffey). Carlisle's first album, Belinda, was released on I.R.S. Records, in 1986. Her #3 Summer hit "Mad About You" was followed by the Motown-influenced single "I Feel the Magic", and by a cover version of "Band of Gold". All three songs were included on her debut album.

During this time, Carlisle also had songs featured on movie soundtracks, notably "In My Wildest Dreams," the opener in the movie Mannequin, as well as "Dancing in the City" from the Whoopi Goldberg movie Burglar.

 Heaven on Earth

Carlisle changed her hairstyle significantly for her second solo album, giving up her California Girl blonde bob for a long auburn do for 1987 Heaven on Earth. The musical style eschewed the 1960s-influenced pop of Carlisle's first album in favor of slickly produced 1980s power-pop, and was released in the United States through MCA, and in the United Kingdom through Virgin. The album became a Top 5 bestseller in the UK and Australia, and was nominated for a Grammy Award. The album's producer, Rick Nowels, previously worked with Stevie Nicks, and would later collaborate with Madonna.

The first release from Heaven on Earth was the semi-title track "Heaven Is a Place on Earth", which topped the single charts, not only in the U.S., but also in the UK and Australia (the dance mix of the song also topped the dance chart). The radio-ready song was further propelled by a video, directed by Academy Award-winning American actress Diane Keaton. The second release from Heaven on Earth stormed to U.S. #2, and was another UK Top 10 smash, "I Get Weak," written by Diane Warren; it was accompanied by another Keaton-directed video. The third single and video from the album was "Circle in the Sand," another Top 10 hit in the U.S., the UK and Germany too. "World Without You" was another British hit, followed by 1988 low-charting ballad "Love Never Dies", making this her fifth single from the album in the UK. In the U.S., the fourth and last single, "I Feel Free," a cover of the Cream classic, missed the Top 40. (( Read more on the wikepedia link.))

Alanis Nadine Morissette (born June 1, 1974) is a Canadian-born singer-songwriter, record producer, and actor. She has won 12 Juno Awards and seven Grammy Awards, and has sold over 55 million albums worldwide.[1][2] Morissette began her career in Canada, and as a teenager recorded two dance-pop albums, Alanis and Now Is the Time, under MCA Records. Her international debut album was the rock-influenced Jagged Little Pill, which remains the best-selling debut album by a female artist in the U.S., and the highest selling debut album worldwide in music history.[3][4] According to RIAA and United World Charts, Alanis is the biggest selling female rock artist in music. Her following album, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, was released in 1998 and was a success as well. Morissette took up producing duties for her subsequent albums, which include Under Rug Swept, So-Called Chaos and latest release Flavors of Entanglement. Alanis became an American citizen in 2005.[5].......................

[edit] 2006 ¨C present: Flavors of Entanglement

2006 marked the first year in the recorded history of Morissette's musical career that she had not a single concert appearance showcasing her own songs, with the exception of an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in January when she performed "Wunderkind".

On April 1, 2007, Morissette released a tongue-in-cheek cover of The Black Eyed Peas's selection "My Humps," which she recorded in a slow, mournful voice, accompanied only by a piano. The accompanying YouTube-hosted video, in which she dances provocatively with a group of men and hits the ones who attempt to touch her "lady lumps," had received over fifteen million views by June 7.[40] Morissette did not take any interviews for a time to explain the song, and it was theorized that she did it as an April Fools' Day joke.[41] Black Eyed Peas vocalist Stacy "Fergie" Ferguson responded by sending Morissette a buttocks-shaped cake with an approving note.[42] On the verge of the release of her latest album, she finally elaborated on how the video came to be, citing that she came to be emotionally loaded while recording her new songs one after the other and one day she wished she could do a simple song like "my humps" in a conversation with Guy Sigsworth and the joke just took a life of its own when they started working on it.[43]

    Morissette in December, 2004
    Morissette in December, 2004

Morissette performed at a gig for The Nightwatchman, a.k.a. Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave fame, at the Hotel Caf¨¦ in Los Angeles in April 2007. The following June, she performed "The Star-Spangled Banner" and "O Canada", the American and Canadian national anthems, in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals between the Ottawa Senators and the Anaheim Ducks in Ottawa, Ontario.[2] In early 2008, Morissette participated in a tour with Matchbox Twenty and Mute Math as a special guest.

Morissette's seventh studio album, Flavors of Entanglement, which she co-produced with Guy Sigsworth, was released in mid 2008. She has stated that in late 2008, she would embark on a North American headlining tour, but in the meantime she would be promoting the album internationally by performing at shows and festivals and making television and radio appearances. The album's first single was "Underneath", a video for which was submitted to the 2007 Elevate Film Festival, the purpose of which festival was to create documentaries, music videos, narratives and shorts regarding subjects to raise the level of human consciousness on the earth.[44]

As of May 2008, Morissette was halfway through writing a memoir that will focus on women's issues. It will have chapters on sexuality, beauty, relationships and work and was partially inspired by young women who regularly come up to her and tell her their stories of personal pain.[45]

Dido Florian Cloud de Bounevialle O'Malley Armstrong,[1] [2] (born 25 December 1971), is an English BRIT Award-winning and Grammy Award-nominated singer and songwriter.

    Breakthrough: (1998–2000)

Cheeky Records, to which Dido was signed, was sold to BMG records in 1999. This delayed the release of No Angel in the United Kingdom, but also allowed her to concentrate on promoting the album No Angel in the United States, including a slot on Sarah McLachlan's Lilith Fair tour. Through touring, both before and after the album was available, Dido's music began to receive more exposure. The first official single chosen by Dido and her label, "Here with Me", was used as the theme music for the television programme Roswell. Arguably it was this, as well as the airplay on MTV throughout Europe of the Single's video, which brought her attention from the masses.

In 1998, the music producer for the film Sliding Doors picked her track "Thank You" for the soundtrack. No Angel was first released in 1999, and Dido toured extensively to promote the record.

Eminem helped introduce Dido to the US audience in 2000 when he sampled the first verse of "Thank You" in his UK number-one single "Stan", after seeking permission from Dido herself; she also appeared in the music video as Stan's long-suffering girlfriend. She reportedly did not want to do the video at first, as she was uncomfortable with the scene in the video where she had to be tied up and have her mouth covered with duct tape, but later agreed to it and got along well with Eminem and the crew on set. Interest soared in her debut album, leading it to hit charts in Europe on import sales alone, charting in the top five on the UK albums chart before its official UK re-release.

     No Angel (1999–2002)

Her No Angel went on to become the top-selling album of 2001 in the United Kingdom, debuting at, and returning to, number one in the official UK albums chart many times throughout the year. It spawned two top ten hit singles, "Here with Me" and "Thank You", and a further top twenty hit, "Hunter" and a fourth and final single release 'All You Want' which went top 25. It was certified platinum in over thirty-five countries, and is estimated to have sold over 15 million copies worldwide. It is the second biggest selling album of the 21st century in the UK. Dido's widely emulated hairstyle at this time became known as the "Dido flip". After a sold-out worldwide tour (which featured hip-hop artist Pete Miser as her live band's DJ), Dido announced she was taking a sabbatical in 2002, in which time she began to write and record her second album.

Life for Rent and Live 8: (2003–2005)

Life for Rent was released on 29 September 2003 (world), 30 September 2003 (USA & Canada) and became one of the fastest selling albums in UK music history, debuting at number one in the UK, Ireland, France, Denmark, Switzerland, South Africa, Australia, Greece, Mexico, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Thailand and in the top five in the USA, Italy, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Germany and Austria. Preceded by the number-two hit single "White Flag", the music video for which features Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Bones star David Boreanaz, the album sold over 152,000 copies in the first day alone in the UK, and went on to sell over 400,000 in the first week. Three further singles—"Life for Rent", "Don't Leave Home" and "Sand in My Shoes"—were lifted from the album, with Dido embarking on a worldwide tour in support of the album (a DVD of footage from the tour was released in 2005 entitled Dido: Live/Dido – Live at Brixton Academy). It is the 4th biggest selling album of the 21st century in the UK.

Following her sold-out world tour of 2004, Dido was asked to perform at three of the Live 8 concerts on 2 July 2005—performing in London, then at the Eden Project in Cornwall, before flying over to Paris, performing both solo ("White Flag") and duetting with Youssou N'Dour ("Thank You" and "Seven Seconds").

Also in 2005, Dido provided vocals her brothers side project Dusted on the album Safe From Harm. She sings on the tracks: "Time Takes Time", "Hurt U" and "Winter" and she co-wrote three tracks on the album: "Always Remember to Respect & Honour Your Mother, Part 1", "The Biggest Fool in the World" and "Winter"

    Upcoming third album: (2006–2008)

Dido's long awaited new project is coming this year (2008) according to Sony BMG.

Dido started working on her third album by October 2005 in Los Angeles. The album has been produced by Jon Brion and herself. Some collaborators so far have been Brian Eno, Matt Dunkley, ?uestlove, Jim Keltner, Mick Fleetwood, James Gadson, Rollo Armstrong and Matt Chamberlain.

Recording sessions have been held at London's Abbey Road and at Jon Brion's home studio in Los Angeles. (“I recorded my vocals next to the hoover in Jon’s broom cupboard. It was so small, there wasn’t even room for a guitar: I got quite addicted to singing in there,” said Dido for an interview in the Q October issue).[9] The status of the album is still "in-production" as Dido continues studio work on it with her brother Rollo in London, England.

Some songs to be included in this album are: "It Comes And It Goes", "The Day Before", "Never Want To Say It's Love", "Look No Further", the grief-sticken "Grafton Street" (Brian Eno)[10] and there might be a song called "Never Far From Home".[11]

Dido's official website has been relaunched to coincide with the release of the album, and Sony BMG says 'Dido is coming back. She is currently in the studio creating her third album due out soon (more details to follow)'. Her official website was relaunched on June 23, 2008 and states that Dido is holed up in the studio finishing the album, which should be out in short.

The release of the album has been postponed several times due to Dido's father's death in December 2006. The album is now due September 23, 2008 according to direct-current.net.[12]
